Lisbon greets us with its legendary golden light bouncing off intricate azulejo tiles and limestone pavements—a capital that defies the standard European polish, balancing fading grandeur with a vibrant, bohemian energy found nowhere else. It is a city of seven hills where vintage yellow trams rattle through narrow alleys and the scent of grilling sardines mixes with the salty Atlantic breeze, creating an atmosphere that feels both timeless and distinctly alive.
Moving north, we hit Porto, a gritty, charismatic city of granite and iron perched steeply above the Douro River, offering a rawer, more soulful authenticity defined by its dramatic bridges and deep-rooted traditions. We venture upriver into the Douro Valley, the world’s oldest demarcated wine region, where steep, terraced vineyards carve geometric patterns into the mountains—a visually stunning, UNESCO-recognized landscape that feels hand-sculpted by centuries of "heroic" effort.
