Johnny G & Friends' Birthday Flotilla Celebrations

August 15 - 17, 2019
Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe

Hopefully everyone has by now recuperated from Michelle's 50th Flotilla two years ago,
so it is time for another adventure!
This time, John turns 60 and since he has only celebrated two birthdays, 21st & 50
th,
you might want to make this third birthday as odds are he won't make it to 70!
I guess the next big bash will be his funeral?

Out of Towners:
Looking for a unique summer vacation?  Plan on an extended weekend of festivities to enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe.  Starting on Thursday with the local's favorite summer event - Music on the Beach.  Friday has a fun scramble golf tournament at Lake Tahoe Golf Course. The highlight will be on Saturday with our second birthday Flotilla on Lake Tahoe celebrating all the August birthdays!

See the FAQs below for information on directions, lodging, events, and boat rentals.

Bringing your Boat to Lake Tahoe - CRITICAL INFORMATION

Locals:
You will either need a boat, bribe a friend with a boat, or rent a boat to participate in the Flotilla.  Although, Jet skis, canoes, paddle boards, and float tubes could work too.  I guess you could even hike down to Emerald Bay and swim out to meet us if you really want.

NO GIFTS PLEASE.
Anyone bringing a gift will be required to do a Shot Ski. 😆

Schedule of Adventures

  • August 15, Thursday night: Music on the Beach
Music on the Beach is the local's favorite summer events.  Niall McGuinness' New World Jazz Project will be performing that night. NWJP is the best band of the summer concert series so you are in for a big treat! Just bring a beach chair, picnic dinner, your favorite libations, and be ready to grove to the sounds of the New World Jazz Project.
Location: Lake Shore Lodge (Do not confuse it with the Commons concert)  MAP. Facing the lake, we sit to the right towards the back by the walkway. Look for the Party Balloons.
Time: 7 pm but arrive around 6:30 to get a good spot and enjoy a walk along the beach.

Cost: Free!  And since this is Lake Tahoe, you can bring your own alcoholic beverages and food!

  • August 16, Friday: Golf Scramble
This is a fun scramble style tournament where everyone hits their ball and your team chooses which ball everyone plays from for the next shot.  No matter how lousy you are, this format makes it fun.

Lake Tahoe Golf Course 2500 Emerald Bay Road. South Lake Tahoe, CA  96150

  • August 17, Saturday: Flotilla on the Lake (See Logistics below for boating options
There is now a Lake Tahoe Boating app.  Might be handy for those unfamiliar with Lake Tahoe.
We will tie up our boats in Emerald Bay so bring extra fenders to protect your boat.  Due to the size of the group, you will need to bring your own lunch and beverages.  Kids are welcome, but this group can get a bit out-of-hand and most of the kids will be more mature than the adults.  Also, Lake Tahoe is extremely cold so you will need to watch your kids at all times and ensure they have life jackets.

    • Location: Emerald Bay in between Vikingsholm Castle and Fannette Island.

    • Time: 11am - 3pm.  It takes 60-90 minutes from South Lake Tahoe to Emerald Bay by boat.

    • Things to Bring: Sunscreen, your own beverages and food, Kids life jackets, Swimsuits, medium jacket in case it gets breezy on the way back.  If you have a floating island, bring that too!

  • August 17, Saturday night: Post Flotilla Party
If you still have some energy, or if you couldn't make the Flotilla, then take a Lyft or Uber to continue the party at Lake Tahoe Aleworx. Kid friendly and beer& wine friendly too!  Pizza available and activities in the yard for kids and adults.

Logistics

  • Lodging
Summer lodging in Lake Tahoe fills fast.  You must book before the end of May to find a good property.  Fortunately, I have several business partners that are giving us a great deal at their properties.  There is no need to be near my home since everywhere in South Lake Tahoe is never more than 20 minutes.
(Be sure to book in SOUTH Lake Tahoe)
Use the links below to book your lodging and be sure to email me your reservations so I can ensure you are getting your discount.  Feel free to come early or stay late as there are numerous things to do in Lake Tahoe.

  • Boating:

    • Boat Rentals:

      • Tahoe Sports Boat Rentals: Unfortunately, Captain Ron cannot extend a discount this year as they sell out every single weekend in the summer so he would lose money on us.  But Captain Ron is going to let us check-in the day before so we can avoid the long rental lines.  While I suggest a pontoon boat, you are welcome to rent any boat you prefer.  Please do NOT exceed the maximum capacity of your boat as Coast Guard and Sheriffs will be watching us.
If you intend to rent from them, please let me know in advance so I can reserve and organize your early check-in.

      • Action Watersports -  I will see if I can get a discount.  Stay tuned. No rush to reserve yet.

      • Tahoe Wake Busters: They are unfortunately out by Cave Rock which is on the other side of the lake, but they have double-decker pontoons with slides.

      • If you want to go in with others and share a rental boat, please let me know and I will put you in touch with others.
If you have room on your boat and would like some gas  beverages donations, please let me know and I will put fun people on your boat.  Once we get there, everyone travels from boat to boat or lies out on a raft so don't feel awkward catching a ride with someone you don't know, yet.

    • Boat with a Captain: I just met the owners of Tahoe Tastings and Lake Tahoe Boat Rides.  Both owners are interested in working with us for our own private rental including captain.  I am thinking they will simply drive a group and hang out with us at the party.  They are really fun owners so this could be a nice option for those preferring not to drive.  Stay tuned for details.

    • CRITICAL INFORMATION: Bringing your own Boat:
ALL watercraft must be inspected before entering Lake Tahoe. Please go to the inspection website and read everything.
https://tahoeboatinspections.com/  READ THE FAQs!  I also suggest you get it inspected the day before you plan to launch your boat as the summer inspection lines can be long.  Contact me if you plan to boat more than one day on the lake as there are several options.

  • Getting to and around South Lake Tahoe

    • Airports

      • Reno (RNO) is 70 minutes away and South Tahoe Airporter is a direct shuttle into town. Given Tahoe is so small, you really could shuttle in and Lyft/Uber around.

      • Sacramento (SMF) is 2 hours away with no shuttle.  The return to SMF is at least 3-4 hours away with Sunday return traffic.  Keep that in mijnd when booking your return flight.

      •   San Francisco (SFO) and Oakland (OAK) are 3.5 hours away with no traffic.  Add 2 hours minimum with traffic.

    • Car Rentals are at the airports and locally at Enterprise RAC.

    • Taxis Lyft and Uber are both common.  If you have an American Express Platinum Card, you get $20 off Uber for the month!  If you have a Visa, I guess they accept that, but you get no extra benefits.  Ha!
