Where did the name, "Johnny G" come from?
|

University
Stereo Ad
L.A. Times, 1979 |
In
the late 70's, while working at University Stereo, a cashier named Kathy Mayfield, nicknamed him
'Johnny
G', to distinguish him from the three other Johns working in the store. Although he
hated the name Johnny, if you knew what Kathy Mayfield looked like, you would understand why he accepted the name. For whatever reason,
customers always remembered the name 'Johnny G' and because referred customers always remembered to ask for Johnny G when buying stereo equipment, he kept it.
Dumb name, but everyone remembered Johnny G. |
| How did Johnny G Adventures come about? |
In the early 80's, John started organizing various events such as ski trips, Dodger-Giants games, and themed parties. Every event was usually over the top with private sections and bars on planes, tail gate parties of 100+ guests at Candlestick Park and Dodger Stadium, and the annual Super Bowl Pentathlon party requiring 48 inebriated guests to compete in 5 sporting events (table tennis, darts, badminton, pool, and bowling) in one day.
Although he never really made any profit on his events, the enjoyment of introducing his guests to new friends and watching everyone have fun made it all worthwhile. |

Aknod's Ruby Premier - 1991
|
In the 90's, his events continued to get bigger and more elaborate. Capturing most of the events on video, John began to produce videos on past events to entertain his guests. In 1991, he decided to make a full-length movie. He produced and directed Aknod's Ruby, filmed in various locations of LA, Santa Barbara, and Hawaii. Understandably, the movie never made it past it's opening debut at Paul May's New Year's Eve Party.
Realizing his potential as a movie maker, he quickly decided to give it up and go back to creating unforgettable memories through unique events.
When he moved to Lake Tahoe. CA in 1999, he had a constant flow of friends visiting. John was excited to share all that Tahoe offers and took guests shooting, off-roading, skiing on both snow and water, mountain biking, etc. After each guest left, they usually referred to their weekend as "another Johnny G adventure".
After several requests, he began to offer his "adventures" to others outside his circle of friends. When searching for a company name, it was quickly suggested the company could only be called - Johnny G Adventures.
